Furnace Repair in Shively, KY

Shively furnaces have a specific problem, and it is usually the ductwork

Shively was Kentucky’s fastest-growing city in the 1950s. The housing that went
up along the Dixie Highway corridor in that boom was modest, well-built, and
designed for returning veterans starting families – small single-family homes,
built fast and in volume.

Seventy years later, most of those houses are on their third or fourth heating
system. The furnaces have been replaced. The ductwork, in a great many cases, has
not. That mismatch is behind more Shively “furnace problems” than any actual
furnace defect.

Why it matters

A 1950s house was often heated by a gravity furnace or an early forced-air unit
with generous, low-velocity ducts. Replace that with a modern high-efficiency
furnace and you have a blower moving far more air through a return path that was
never sized for it. The result is high static pressure, and high static pressure
produces exactly the symptoms homeowners call a broken furnace:

  • Short-cycling – runs a few minutes, shuts off, repeats
  • The high-limit switch tripping and locking out the system
  • Rooms at the end of the run that never get warm
  • Blower motors and heat exchangers failing years early
  • A furnace that is noticeably louder than it should be

We measure static pressure on every Shively diagnostic call. It takes a few
minutes and it is the difference between fixing the problem and selling you a
larger version of it.

What we actually check on a furnace call

The cheap causes first

Dirty flame sensor, failing hot-surface igniter, clogged filter, tripped
pressure switch, blocked condensate drain on a high-efficiency unit. These are the
majority of no-heat calls and they are inexpensive. A contractor who arrives and
immediately starts talking about a new system has not done the diagnosis.

Then the safety items

Heat exchanger integrity, flue draft, gas pressure, and combustion. On the older
equipment still running in Shively, cracked heat exchangers are a real finding, not
a scare tactic. If we find one we will show you.

Then the system as a whole

Static pressure, return sizing, temperature rise across the heat exchanger. If
your temperature rise is outside the manufacturer’s range, the furnace is being
asked to do something it was not designed to do, and it will keep failing until
that is corrected.

Repair, replace, or fix the ducts

In Shively this is genuinely a three-way decision more often than a two-way one.
We have seen homeowners replace a furnace twice in eight years because nobody
looked at the return air. Sometimes the right answer is a smaller repair plus
duct correction, and that is a smaller invoice than a new furnace. We will lay out
all three options with prices.

If replacement is the right call, correct sizing matters. The instinct to go
bigger is wrong – an oversized furnace in a small post-war house short-cycles,
wears out faster, and heats less evenly than a correctly sized one.

Older commercial and light-industrial buildings

Shively’s distilling history left behind a stock of older commercial and
warehouse buildings, many with rooftop units or aging make-up air equipment. That
is different work from residential furnaces and we handle it through our
commercial HVAC service.

Getting to you

We are based in Fairdale, a short run down Dixie Highway. Shively is inside our
core service area, not the edge of it, and that shows up in how quickly we can get
to a no-heat call in January.
