HVAC Service in Shively, KY

A city built in one decade, and what that means for your HVAC system

Shively incorporated in 1938 with just over a thousand residents, grew up around
Louisville’s bourbon distilleries, and then became the fastest-growing city in
Kentucky through the 1950s. The population peaked at more than 19,000 by 1970.

Nearly all of that growth happened in a single wave of post-war construction
along Dixie Highway – modest, well-built single-family homes for veterans starting
families. That history is not trivia. It means Shively’s housing stock is unusually
uniform, and it means the HVAC problems here are unusually predictable.

The three things we see most in Shively homes

1. Modern equipment on original ductwork

The furnaces and air conditioners in these houses have been replaced two or
three times. The duct system usually has not. A high-efficiency furnace moving air
through returns sized for 1955 equipment runs at high static pressure, which
short-cycles the system, trips the high limit, and wears out blower motors and heat
exchangers years early. Homeowners replace the furnace, the problem returns, and
they conclude they bought a bad unit.

We measure static pressure before quoting any replacement in Shively. It is the
single most useful five minutes of a diagnostic call here.

2. Oversized air conditioning

These are small houses, and the reflex to install a bigger unit is strong and
wrong. Louisville sits in the Ohio River valley, where summer is humid as well as
hot. An oversized AC cools the air quickly, shuts off before it has pulled moisture
out, and leaves you with a house that reads 72 degrees and feels clammy. Correct
sizing does more for comfort here than extra capacity.

3. Rooms that were never part of the original plan

Finished basements, converted garages, and additions tied into a system that was
sized for the original footprint. If one room in your house has never been
comfortable in either season, the answer is usually zoning or a
ductless mini-split,
not more furnace.

Heating and cooling in the river valley

Two local realities shape equipment choices. Summer humidity makes dehumidification
as important as cooling, which argues for correctly sized equipment and variable-speed
blowers over raw tonnage. Winter here is freeze-thaw rather than sustained deep cold,
which is hard on heat pumps specifically – every swing across freezing is another
defrost cycle. Heat pumps work well in Shively, but the defrost controls need annual
attention and the backup heat strategy has to actually engage.

Older commercial buildings

The distilleries largely closed by the late 1960s, but the commercial and
warehouse building stock they left behind is still in use. Rooftop units, make-up
air, and aging light-commercial equipment are a different discipline from
residential work. We cover it under
commercial HVAC services.
