HVAC Service in Pleasure Ridge Park, KY

PRP is mid-century housing with mid-century venting
Pleasure Ridge Park grew up fast in the 1950s and 60s, when its position between
downtown Louisville and Fort Knox made it an easy place to build. The typical PRP
house reflects that: a modest single-family home, built around 1963, somewhere near
1,600 square feet, on a street of houses very much like it.
Sixty years on, almost all of those homes are on their second or third heating
system. What usually has not changed is how the furnace vents. That single detail
drives more PRP service calls than anything else we see here, and it is the thing
most quotes leave out.
The chimney problem nobody mentions until the install day
A 1960s house was typically built with an 80% efficiency furnace and a gas water
heater both venting into the same masonry chimney. That arrangement works because
the furnace’s hot exhaust carries the water heater’s exhaust up with it.
Replace that furnace with a modern 90%-plus condensing unit and the picture
changes completely. The new furnace vents through PVC pipe out a sidewall, and the
water heater is left venting alone into a chimney that is now far too large for it.
Exhaust cools, condenses against the masonry, and can spill back into the house
instead of going up. That is a carbon monoxide risk, and over time the moisture
chews up the chimney itself.
The fix is not complicated, but it has to be priced in: the chimney needs a
correctly sized liner for the orphaned water heater, or the water heater needs to be
replaced with a power-vented or direct-vent unit at the same time. When we quote a
high-efficiency furnace in PRP, that conversation happens before you sign, not after
the old furnace is on the truck.
What else we find in Pleasure Ridge Park homes
Additions, converted garages, and enclosed carports
A lot of PRP houses have grown since they were built. When a garage becomes a
family room or a carport becomes a bedroom, that space is usually tied into the
existing ductwork without anyone recalculating the load. The result is one room that
never gets comfortable and a system that runs longer trying to satisfy a thermostat
in a different part of the house. Zoning or a ductless mini-split is almost always
the better answer than a bigger furnace.
Original ductwork under newer equipment
Modern furnaces move more air than the units these houses were built around. When
the ducts never got revisited, static pressure climbs, the blower works harder, and
the heat exchanger runs hotter than it should. We measure static pressure on
replacement quotes here rather than matching whatever size was in the closet.
Humid summers and oversized air conditioners
Ohio River valley summers are humid, and an oversized air conditioner cools the
air quickly, shuts off before it has removed much moisture, and leaves the house at
72 degrees and clammy. Correct sizing matters more in this climate than in a dry one,
which is why we run a load calculation instead of copying the old nameplate.
Riverport and the Cane Run corridor
The Riverport industrial park and the businesses along Cane Run Road sit inside
40258, and that work is different from residential service — rooftop units, make-up
air, and light commercial equipment on maintenance schedules that cannot wait for a
convenient appointment window. We handle it through our
commercial HVAC service.
Permits
Pleasure Ridge Park was annexed into Louisville in the 2003 city-county merger, so
equipment replacements here are permitted and inspected through Louisville Metro. We
pull the permit on every replacement, and the inspection is part of the job rather
than an extra line item.
